Track Cycling Gallery
‘Track’ is a peculiar sporting discipline, with Sprinters its very fast and close, and I’m fortunate to be in a position to stand on the outside of the barriers (on the Cote d’Azure – the dark blue section) at Velodromes , to capture those moments. Part of the photographic skill is knowing the various sporting events, what the riders are likely to be doing and where the best pictures are, of course there is an element of luck too, as capturing handslings (the ‘aflosse’) depends upon being in the right place at the right time.
I’m fortunate to have worked with and captured some prominent athletes at world class events, some of whom I now consider to be good friends. I have also worked with organisations, teams and sponsors to capture both the images they want, and race images to my ‘style’.
Onto my ‘style’, where I can, I use multiple remote flash and triggers to control lighting, Velodromes can often be naturally quite poorly lit, lit by different types of lighting and produce sub-optimal results, often needing a lot of editing. Controlling the lighting gives better results in camera, with more consistency and less editing required. I do capture images using available light, on camera flash and by using the light of broadcast crews, all of which you’ll see in this gallery. You will notice my style most often by the inclusion of shadows.
The ‘pinnacle’ of my Track work so far has been the documentary photography of Alex Dowsett in his build up to, and his successful attempt at the UCI ‘Hour Record’, currently (as of December 2018) only beaten by Sir Bradley Wiggins. To work with Alex and his personal team, with Movistar (his trade team at the time of the event), and with Alex’s charity (Little Bleeders) was a great honour, and I feel that the access afforded, and the cooperation is justified in the world class images created to help celebrate his success. To capture great images during practice sessions is very different from capturing iconic shots during a live event. You can’t ask for a ‘retake’, though with ‘track’ at least the rider comes back around quite frequently.
Now the sales pitch bit – if you want my style of track coverage, think that you, your brand, team or sponsor would benefit from these studio quality images, please get in touch via the contact form. Some of my track work is related to corporate style events, and I work closely with organisers, commissars and riders to ensure events and memories are captured, and in a safe way for the riders. There is a certain cache for corporate and club events to having photographs taken by a very experienced track cycling photographer.
